Executive Perspectives: Chiyeh “Angela” Boone

Building a strong cash reserve will help businesses weather most crises, says the CEO of Fort Worth Gasket & Supply.

Chiyeh “Angela” Boone worked for Texas Instruments in Taiwan before moving to the United States in the mid-1980s. She joined her late husband’s company in the mid-1990s and now runs it as president and CEO. As its name implies, Fort Worth Gasket & Supply makes gaskets, seals, fasteners, and other products. It caters to government entities and original equipment manufacturers.

How are you coping amid the COVID-19 crisis?

Although it has been very stressful, as a critical essential business in the Defense Industrial Base Sector and manufacturing, I feel it is our professional responsibility and social obligation to keep full operation and stay on course.

Did your business continuity plan work, or were there surprises?

So far, no surprises. We follow government guidance. We closed our counter sales open service and ask for phone appointments in advance.

What are the short-term ramifications for your specific industry?

Most of our suppliers and customers are essential businesses, so we have not seen extreme disruptions but can’t predict the near future as there are changes daily.

Have you found silver linings in these difficult times?

All storms shall pass. We just do everything right and take things one day at a time.

How are you maintaining your company culture?

As a leader, I communicate and update them frequently. I also express my thanks to them frequently and encourage them to stay calm and follow government guidance.

What have you learned that may change your policies or strategies for the future?

We might invest more in cybersecurity to make remote working possible in the future. We will do more cross-training to form more working teams.

What will things look like for your company and industry in another six months?

We anticipate that business will decrease due to an overall weakened economy.

Do you have advice for other local companies?

I don’t know about businesses in other industries. My industry is operating. I believe building a strong cash reserve will help businesses to weather through most crises.
