Artists have known the perks and pain points of working from home long before the rest of the world caught on. Many of Dallas’ visual creatives, both up-and-coming and established, prefer the comfort and inspiration that comes from creating in a familiar place. But how that environment informs their work—and how their aesthetic, in turn, influences their living spaces—is wholly individual. We went inside the homes of six local artists, whose means of self-expression on and off the canvas give a revealing peek into their distinct personalities and points of view.
As a wife, mother, business owner, and creator, Justyn Chapman’s Southlake home meets the intersection of thoughtful design and tranquil refuge. The space, which her family has called home for three years, both inspires her to create and allows her to take off her many hats and just breathe. “I want to surround myself with elements that are found and created that basically stand the test of time and trends, and that’s what pushes me as a creative,” she says. “My friend paid me a large compliment the other day and said, ‘Your house looks like it’s probably a museum.’ ”
Chapman has collected or designed and created most of her furniture and decor—which have become such a hit, she and her husband, Barnes, are considering starting a lifestyle brand to offer her art and furniture finds to the public. The result is a modern, luxurious space that feels uniquely personal and bespoke. While she knows it’s not their forever home, it has offered the family a comforting respite from the outside world: “I think it is more important now than ever to have a space that allows you that place of peace.”
